Andalusia Bird Festival of Montejaque
First ornithological fair in the province

Between April 19 and 21, 2024, Montejaque hosted the Andalucía Bird Festival, the first fair in the province of Málaga dedicated to ornithology, organized by its City Council with the support of the Málaga Provincial Council through its Delegation of Sustainable Territory. The event, held for fans of bird watching and the enjoyment of nature, had 1,300 visitors who enjoyed a varied and complementary program of activities.

Interesting and varied lecture series
Throughout these three days, a series of conferences related to birds were held, both in the most local context and at the national and European levels. These conferences, held with different complementary approaches, have addressed aspects related to the conservation and observation of birds, dealing with topics as diverse as the use of nest boxes to promote biodiversity, the bird community of the Serranía de Ronda , the importance of ornithological tourism in local development or the decline of the owl due to popular superstition, to name a few examples.
On behalf of Birding Málaga, a talk was held with a tour of the Malaga birdlife through the different publications published by the Malaga Provincial Council.

Exhibition area with 18 stands
Parallel to the conference cycle, the exhibition area was made up of 18 stands, made up of companies in the sector, administrations and conservation NGOs.
Birding Málaga had a stand where its publications were displayed and visitors were informed about the different initiatives promoted around bird watching and conservation.
Educational workshops for the little ones
Another highlight of the event has been the organization of different environmental education workshops, both with the educational community of this mountain municipality and with the youngest visitors who attended the fair. These workshops consisted of making nest boxes and carrying out different crafts and games in order to instill in the little ones a passion for birds in a playful and attractive way.

Ornithological routes and photography contest
During the three days of the event, guided bird watching routes were organized to the enclaves of greatest ornithological interest in the municipality such as the Cueva del Hundidero, the Presa de los Caballeros and the surroundings of the Pantanillo de Montejaque.
Photography and documentary contest
A total of 115 participants entered this photography contest and the documentary “Aguilucha: the indomitable spirit of a threatened species” was premiered in Andalusia.
Exciting future

We hope that the success and the good taste left in our mouths by this first edition will be an essential incentive to consolidate this wonderful initiative and we are convinced that the planning and development of the Andalusia Bird Festival in 2025 will be even more interesting and fruitful.
