Bird of the month – October 2019

A Yellow-browed Warbler (Mosquitero bilistado – Phylloscopus inornatus) in the mist near Casares, found by Enrique Garcia 12th October 2019 and photographed by ABS member Kevin Wade.

Breeds in temperate Asia and is a wide ranging migrant, wintering mainly in tropical South and South-east Asia. Yet a small number winter in western Europe, these are thought to belong to those breeding west of the Urals. A population that has seen a dramatic increase in recent decades. Still an amazing migration representing a migration of some 4,000 to 4,500 km from the Urals.

In recent years they have been regular winter visitors to the region and reports from Morocco indicate an ever increasing number reaching these southern regions.
