Information about the Meeting
Global Birding is a venture formed by our very own ABS Patron Tim Appleton MBE. The venture aims to inspire birdwatchers to come together as a global community celebrating our birds by participating in birdwatching, birdwatching events, citizen science and conservation.
Global Birding aims to raise funds for conservation via participants donating at an event as well as those companies or individuals who wish to promote themselves on the website.
People are more aware of their environment than ever before, so let’s work together to conserve and protect our world.

ABS will again be participating in this fun day and join teams from around the world to discover as many bird species in a day as possible. The Global Birding Big Day is Saturday the 8th of September 2022, and our ABS team will meet at Hotel Codorniz near to Tarifa at 9am. The meeting point has a breakfast bar so members can arrive early for a coffee and/or a breakfast, the Hotel is an affiliate member of the Society and can provide accommodation if any member wishes to arrive the night before or even spend an extra night after the event and make it a weekend break.
Hotel Website here
Other Hotels and accommodation can be found for the area on our website here.
Also other hotels. Hotel Hurricane and Cortijo El Pozuelo for further info on hotels in the Tarifa area see here.
In the event we have a good turnout of members we can divide into teams and explore different birding hotspots in the area including Tarifa for migration, La Janda and Barbate Marshes. It promises to be a real fun day and we know members really enjoyed coming along to these special days in the past, so be sure to book your attendance on the event page so organisers can plan better for the day.
Clothing and Food
Members can bring their own packed lunch or there are plenty of ventas in the area for those who want a sit-down meal.
Possible Birds
There will still be a few migrants heading to Africa, so we will see raptors and soaring birds in the areas visited on the day. We are hoping to see some of the local specialities such as Spanish Imperial Eagle, Black-winged Kite, Hen Harrier, Osprey, Bald Ibis, Bluethroat and others including many wader and heron species at La Janda and Barbate Marshes. Of course, with a good number of members attending more eyes will mean more birds!
Notes:
1. We will ask a member to write a trip report for our experiences of the day.
2. Members can invite guests, but they must join the Society on the day for insurance purposes.
3. We will ask members in attendance to pay a €5,00 entry fee in the collection box to show their appreciation for the day and help support the Chipiona Little Swift Colony, an ABS Caring for Nature project. More details here.
If you would like to help us in funding the many conservation projects we support please donate via this link here.
