The ABS will be joining the Global Big Day 2022!
#absglobalbigday2022

Taking part in Global Big Day means that essential data about birds across the world is gathered for research through eBird. Be a part of the ABS birding’s “Wild by Nature” team!

Global Big Day is an annual celebration of the birds and this year we have chosen Fuente de Piedra as a great location, to bring together the special ABS community spirit. Offering birdwatchers and photographers alike to share their sightings with the birding community across the world from a familiar patch.

Meeting Point: Visitor Centre Car Park Laguna Fuente de Piedra.
Start time: 9:00 a.m.
Wild by Nature Team Captain :
Peter Jones (ABS President)
Head Field Guide Leader :
Frank Hair (ABS Field Meeting Officer)
Event Organiser :
Harley Dave (ABS Fundraising Officer)

Separate groups to be selected by the Captain, dependent on the number of participants attending on the day.

If you wish to participate and you are currently not a member of the ABS, then you can join us now at:
https://www.joinit.org/o/asoc-andaluca-bird-society

Entry fee: €5,00 per person payable on the day, all funds to be donated to Birdlife International.

Accommodation in the area: Google

Clothing and food: Expect warm weather. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty. Wear loose, lightweight, a hat and sunscreen. Food is available at various local restaurants in the village or you can bring your own packed lunch.

Possible birds: Iberian Grey Shrike, Great Crested Grebe, Greater Flamingo, Spoonbill, Little Bustard, Red-Crested Pochard, White-Headed Duck, Shoveler, Teal, Gadwall, Lapwing, Black-winged Stilt, Common Snipe, Avocet, Gull sp., Stone Curlew, Common Buzzard, Hen Harrier, Black-winged Kite, Sparrowhawk, Merlin, Common Crane, Purple Swamphen, Water Rail, Little Owl, Hoopoe, Iberian Woodpecker, Water Pipit, Bluethroat, Reed Bunting and many more species.

This years ABS “Wild by Nature” team will be divided into smaller “scouting” groups with an assigned expert field guide. Each group will be sent to designated areas around the Fuente de Piedra lake. Groups will work in opposite directions, circumnavigating the lagoon. The fun day will also take in other lakes, such as Laguna Dulce in nearby Campillos. The idea is to rotate at a given time, so everyone gets to look for species which might otherwise not be added to the days tally.

The ABS team Captain will submit the event sightings and photographs before the 17th May, to the US based citizen science gathering tool of eBird, part of Cornell University, to be included in our initial results announcement.
The data collected from Fuente de Piedra will be added to a set of figures gathered from other parts of Spain – verified by their system. The final results will be published on the https://www.facebook.com/abscaringfornature page together with the sum of money raised by our team entry.

All fundraising from the event will be donated to Birdlife International projects.
