Event: March field meeting for ABS
Date: 20th March 2021
Start Time: 9.00
Leader for the day: Frank Hair
Meeting Point: The car park of Hotel Apolo XI (see map above)
Information about the meeting:
La Janda is one of the most important areas in Southern Spain and is now being recognised as such. Frank’s local knowledge will ensure we have a fruitful day searching for newly arrived summer visitors, spring migrants and of course a few lingering winter visitors.
Accommodation in the area:
Details about the accommodation offered by our Affiliated Members in this area can be found by using the following link https://www.andaluciabirdsociety.org/affiliated-services/accommodation-by-province/cadiz.html
Clothing and Food:
Packed lunch is the order of the day, but there are plenty of ventas in the area for those who want a sit down meal.
Possible birds:
Black Kites, Honey Buzzard, White Stork, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Egyptian Vulture, Griffon Vulture and possibly Black Stork and very many more. As this will be the start of the main spring migration, we could see any of the birds using the Strait to migrate between Africa and Europe, along with any over wintering birds which remain here.
Other sites in the area for those staying overnight:
Tarifa is only a few Kilometres further south and is another excellent place for watching the spring migration. Further north is the Laguna de Medina and anywhere along this cost is a good place for watching birds. Information about all these bird sites can be found on the Society’s web site https://www.andaluciabirdsociety.org/bird-sites/cadiz.html
Note:
1. We will ask a member to write a trip report for our experiences of the day.
2. Members can invite guests, but they must join the Society on the day for insurance purposes.
