Meeting Point: Venta la Cantina – Castellar de la Frontera, see map
Leader for the day: Frank Hair
Directions: See Map attached
Information about the meeting: We meet at the Venta la Cantina (see map), those arriving early will be able to purchase a coffee/breakfast before we depart to Castillo de Castellar. The old Castillo makes for a great viewing area for raptor migration without the crowds normally associated with our ‘normal’ migration watch at Tarifa. We will spend the morning here, there is also a small colony of Lesser Kestrel around the old walls and often birds passing can be seen at eye level. In the afternoon we will explore the rolling hills to the northwest of the Castillo.
Accommodation: We have no affiliated members that have a hotel or Casa Rural accommodation in the area, so better to Google and search for hotels nearby.
Clothing and food: It may be hot/fresh so bring suitable clothing. A lightweight jacket, hat and sunscreen are advised. Lunch can be had at a local Venta or bring a packed lunch (your choice).
Possible birds: Griffon, Black and Egyptian Vulture, Black Kite, Short-toed and Booted Eagle, Sparrowhawk, Common and Lesser Kestrel, Peregrine, Alpine, Pallid and Common Swift, Red-billed Chough, on approaching the watch point Subalpine, Bonelli’s and Orphean Warbler and other species of oak woodlands. We will also stop at a great place to see Monarch Butterfly.
1. We will ask a member to write a trip report for our experiences of the day.
2. Members can invite guests, but they must join the Society on the day for insurance purposes.
