Every year thousands of wild animals are found injured, sick or debilitated. These specimens require very diverse care, from mere rest and food to delicate surgical interventions, before being returned to their natural habitat.
The Andalusian Network of Endangered Species Recovery Centers (CREA) was created in 2001 with the aim of recovering incapacitated specimens of endangered and protected species, to later release them into their natural habitat.
If you find an injured or sick bird, please get in touch with one of the Rescue Centres throughout Andalucía. We have arranged the Rescue Centres per Province (including the Crea Centres).
Many birds/animals can be helped if your actions are taken promptly.
If you discover or witness illegal activities related to our wildlife then you can report it to Seprona (environmental department of the Guardia Civil).

SOS Vencejos is an association dedicated to the protection and defense of Andalucian bird life, in particular Swifts, the fast-flying bird from the Apodidae family. We are a non profit organisation; our dedicated volunteers are spread right across the Community of Andalucía. We work tirelessly for the visibility and care of urban birds, especially Swifts (Vencejos in Spanish), Martins and Swallows; specialising in the dissemination, complaints and the raising of fledgling orphans of these particular aerial birds. Rescued birds are in safe hands once delivered to a nearby SOS Swifts colaborator and will have an excellent chance of survival with an eventual release back into nature.
If you wish to report a nest site in danger or you find one of these birds fallen or injured, please do not hesitate to contact this organisation. Detail your location, telephone number and if possible attach a photograph of the bird or nest in question.

The Los Villares Córdoba is an Official CREA rescue initiative aimed at the rehabilitation and safeguarding of autochthonous and endangered species from the region. To coincide with “World Bird Day 2022”, the staff successfully released back into nature two Griffon Vultures, three Eagle Owls along with two Scops Owls and a Short-toed Eagle. In the same year, volunteers managed to rescue more than 700 insectivorous birds. The nearby Cordoba Zoos Conservation Centre also acts as a reception for injured wildlife on behalf of Los Villares.

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is an irrecoverable fauna adoption centre. The Park began in 1994 as a collection of parrots, land tortoises and monkeys all confiscated from illegal traders who were passing through Gibraltar. At first there were no enclosures to house them, but with help of volunteers from the Gibraltar Ornithological & Natural History Society (GOHNS), a number of enclosures were built at the Alameda Gardens. This centre also acts as a reception point to help local fauna, but they will not accept injured wildlife due to the fact of not having an onsite veterinary clinic to treat injuries.
The Park specialises in the rehabilitation of downed Swifts for later release back into the Gibraltarian skies.

Crea-Cegma Marismas del Odiel is an emergency hospital and participates in research and captive breeding programs.

SOS SeaBird Rescue This seabird rescue centre situated on the outskirts of Malaga, comprising of rehabilitation pens dedicated to Gulls and other species of Seabird. There is also a larger free flight cage with a pond. The organisation “Malaga Gaviotas” is run successfully by volunteers, funded mainly by public donations and receives financial support from sympathetic organisations.
The Andalucia Bird Society supports this rehabilitation centre with financial assistance to supply the young birds with fresh fish.

The Blue Bird Veterinary Clinic specialises in exotic birds, animals and reptiles. It focuses its activity on providing veterinary services to domestic and companion animals. The Blue Bird Exotic Pet Hospital have developed various specialities in addition to general consultation which extends freely to local fauna in an emergency; such as wild birds and especially local seabirds that may be immature in their growth stage, poisoned, adults in the molting period, shot by hunters, plundering of nests, run overs, power lines, chicks and premature abandonment. The pet hospital has small cages where injured or malnourished birds are deposited after treatment or surgery for observation. The patient, before being released back into its natural environment, in general, will be transferred to a suitable local foster home for aftercare provided by a carer, for example the voluntary ** “Seagull Healer”.

The El Boticario is an Official rescue centre situated in Montes de Málaga which is part of the national CREA organisation. BIOPARC Fuengirola champions a new model of animal park based on respect for nature and the preservation of its species, a model that has already become a reference at the European level. ProDunas Marbella is a non profit organisation; their volunteers work tirelessly for the defence and preservation of the unique ecosystems that survive in the natural sand dune environments remaining on the coastline of Marbella. This Association promotes the protection of native flora and fauna. The telephone number is attended 24/7 and the rescuer will be advised and guided to a suitable volunteer. The Loggerhead Turtle rescue which we took part in was successfully organised by email and Whatsapp. It is a rescue service run by volunteers completely backed by the Junta de Andalucia Medio Ambiente Agents and CEGMA using the Bioparc Zoo facilities, as and when. The CREA San Jerónimo installations in Seville have been extensively improved to provide both injured birds and animals arriving at the rescue centre with a better medical care service. The Cañada Wildlife Sanctuary (La Cañada de los Pajeros) is the first private restoration and management of gravel pits in Spain. The area has been converted from an old rubbish dump into a protected wetland with high biodiversity. This nature reserve has a Rescue Service with an inhouse vet on hand to receive both injured wild animals and birds. Aquatic species are likely to be adopted and given a home in the sanctuary with other types of birds passed on after a week to the CREA San Jeronimo rehabilitation centre in Seville.
