black-vulture_titleRüppell's Vulture an ever increasing possibility in the southern areas of Andalucia. Increased sightings of this vulture, normally only seen in Africa, has caused a few identification headaches for resident and visiting birders. Also we want to encourage reported sightings of Black Vulture (photo left) outside of those areas where they are resident, so we have produced a photo compilation of the underwing patterns of these vultures and as a comparison to the more widespread and common Griffon Vulture. Hopefully the visual aid of this photograph might assist all those with an interest, do please report your sightings to us!

Useful tip: Where conditions are favourable and the bird is seen at close quarters, the pale fringes to the under tail coverts can assist id of Rüppell's Vulture.

We hope the above may be of assistance and help observers correctly identify and seperate these vulture species. Please do report any sightings of Rüppell's Vulture (also Black Vulture if seen outside of their normal areas of residence). For in depth and greater assistance with seperating Rüppell's Vulture and Griffon Vulture, please refer to our blog entry by clicking on this LINK.
