Meeting to see Vultures at Penon de Zaframagon on Saturday the 23 rd of January 2010. Meet at the estacion de Olvera at the start of the via verde at 10pm. We will then consolidate cars and drive to the carpark which is about 2km from the vulture colony spend a few hours watching the vultures whilst looking for other birds including Bonelli’s Eagle, Crested Tits, Black redstarts, Southern Grey Shrikes amongst other things. Then back to Olvera for some lunch. Then if time on to the vulture feeding station but this is not a legitimate station so there could be nothing or up to 200 birds.

Hi Peter. greetings to all. If the weather permits I will be that day if you want to spend time ringing birds.
The place would be ringing within the nature reserve about 200 meters of the viaduct, near where will you be.
It would be a great pleasure to know the people of this forum.

That would be fantastic Fernando, yes please. I will not be there as I am leading a tour to Gambia and Senegal, but I am certain others would love to see ringing being undertaken and to meet you. I must get a day to go ringing with you, I am ringing here in the Serrania de Ronda, but didn't have so much time this year!

Dear Peter, greetings: it will be a pleasure to have you here someday to ring, I now have much time, so when you want to come to Zaframagón Just send an email for a few days before I make other plans.
I am conducting a research project about 4 years migration of species in this reserve.
Although you can not come this time, would be happy to show some species that inhabit Zaframagón hand to people visiting the 21st of January, although this time of year is bad to see many species.
Take this opportunity to wish the people of this forum a Merry Christmas.
Fernando Gavilan.

23 December 2009

Sounds great Peter.  Unfortunately, we return to UK on 22 January to go on cruise for first two weeks in February so I shall have to miss both events.  Ah well, look forward to the 3rd meeting of year.

I have now completed an "Annual Report for 2009" covering the activities of the Axarquia Bird Group.  having said that, I still have to add photographs.  The intention is to let members know st that they can download their own copy if they so wish.   It will come in two forms;  A4 sing;e size or 2xA% on an A4, already compiled, so that it can be printed off and stitched into booklet.  Total of 32 (A5) sided plus the A4 wrap-round cover.  I'll let you know as soon as all is finished - which should be as soon as I get back from a very cold and snowy UK (Stamford).  Very good morning at Rutland Water (less than 10 miles away) yesterday but will the ferry be running next Sunday, assuming we can get to Dover?  And then there is the whole question of driving through France and Spain!

Either way, it was good to eventually meet up with you and the "gang" this year and I wish everyone, especially yourself and Pieter, a very peaceful Christmas and a very happy and healthy New Year.

Best wishes for a great birding season in 2010, kindest regards

Hello every body we have just returned from the pennon de Zaframagon to check out weather the roads were still passable after all the rain we have had up here.  The road was still there apart from a few mud slides and rivers but all passable in my town car.  When we arrived at the car park the vultures were showing well above the penon.  As we walked along the Via Verde we started to see all the SBJ  including, Black caps, Cirl Buntings, Black Redstarts and Serins.  At the viaduct the vultures were flying over our heads coming from the penon over the viaduct and off to find some food.  The walk back was just as good as the pair of Bonelli’s eagles which are resident at the pennon flew amongst the vultures over our heads.  I will keep you posted as to where we can go to lunch.  Hope to see lots of members on the 23ed.                                                 Have Fun Frank

Hi Frank,

Best of luck with the meeting and do try and contact and liaise with Fernando on ringing demonstration (he can be contacted via private message if you want to arrange times etc). Hope you have a good turnout and look forward to seeing everyone again when I get back from leading a couple of tours! Hoping to arrange a meet for middle or end of March.

Regards to all, Franky may not know that thanks to him, I captured in my mist nets, a specimen in Zaframagón Dunnock.
About 16:00 pm I heard a couple speaking English on the Greenway just past the interpretation center about 200 mtrs.
I approached it just off the road and adjacent bushes had placed a net, you have not seen me but I if you saw the man had a telescope on his back and the woman had "a red sweater? ...
Just as they passed through this site Dunnock saw as a direct networking was appalled by the conversation ...
I was very happy because this is very rare bird here (last year I caught only 4 issues).
Dr. Franky in the field are also spies ... hihi
I hope to share with you the day of the meeting if you have very few passerine birds, at least talk a while.
I leave the Chronicle of the 3rd on my blog.

Hi Every body
I have been down to the estacion de Olvera at the start of the via verde and they will be open on the 23th both, for coffee before we set off and for lunch when we return.  Here is a link to google maps showing Olvera and the via verde (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=36.935253,-5.2677016&z=11&t=h&hl=en-GB)  the estacion de Olvera is at the bottom of cella de la estacion (where it crosses the via verde)  and to the right.  There is a large carpark at the estacion.
