¡Muchas gracias!

Here is a thread posted by Simon Wates (Birdforum) 2nd March. It really beggars belief doesn't it? Simon also provides a link if people want to comment to a Portuguese News Website.

Quote:
Today it has come to public attention that last Friday, 27th February 2009 the adult male of the only pair of Spanish Imperial Eagles that successfully fledged young in Portugal last year, was found shot by its nest.

The body was found and the cause of death verified by biologists working in the Parque Natural de Vale de Guadiana in the Mertola region of the Baixo Alentejo. There are, at the moment either 4 or 5 pairs of this most beautiful and endangered eagle holding territories in Portugal - their reproduction success has been low since they made a comeback from extinction in Portugal around 2000.

I am too saddened for words - I knew this bird!

I wonder if/how people could express their feelings in a constructive manner towards the Portuguese authorities?

Simon (too sad for smilies)

PS; Maybe people could comment on this Portuguese news website - here is the link to the article - it has a text box at the bottom - no problem writing in English but keep it simple - It would be good for them to get some response from abroad. There is another little box that say Pais - this means Country!

I have just looked at the Publico newspaper website and there is a photo of the eagle and more than 300 comments on this disgraceful cowardly act. One of them, albeit anonymous, says that it is a known fact that many gamekeepers shoot birds of prey to "protect" game on their herdades.

I guess this happens European/Worldwide Mike, but the shock and sadness is more so given the enormous amount of time and energy going into conserving and encouraging this species. It is very difficult to describe my true feelings regarding people who inflict such cowardly acts on these near extinct birds. I could try, but I know Clive would moderate any such comments!

The actual link is http://ultimahora.publico.clix.pt/noticia.aspx?id=1367354&idCanal=2100
A bit longer than the one you posted. If it proves too much typing you can always type in  aguia-imperial on the newspaper`s website (stop at ...pt)and the item will come up. There are one or two comments in English from the UK. All want this criminal brought to justice and say those who know who it is are just as guilty if the person is not reported to the police.
cheers
